Board of Directors
Vice President

I am seeking election to the Board of Directors because I bring both lived experience and proven leadership in advancing family child care. As a provider, I understand the realities of running a high-quality program, balancing business sustainability, regulatory requirements, and the developmental needs of children and families. As a leader, I have translated that experience into action, working to elevate the voices of family child care providers and strengthen our systems of support.

In my role as a state leader and program lead for a statewide Family Child Care Network, I have built meaningful connections with providers, organized initiatives that expand access to resources, and advocated for policies that recognize the essential role of family child care in our economy. I am deeply committed to ensuring providers are not only heard, but actively shaping the decisions that impact their work.

If elected, I will bring a collaborative, solutions-focused approach to the Board. I believe in meeting providers where they are, creating pathways for engagement, and building systems that are both equitable and sustainable. I will prioritize strengthening membership, supporting accreditation and quality initiatives, and advancing advocacy efforts that lead to real, measurable change.

Family child care is the backbone of early childhood education in many communities. I am ready to serve, lead, and work alongside this Board to ensure our profession is respected, supported, and positioned for the future.

Early childhood education—particularly family child care—has been my professional passion since I opened Mary’s Little Lambs Child Care and Preschool in 1994. From the beginning, I actively sought opportunities to deepen my knowledge and engagement within the early education community. In 1998, I earned my Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, marking my first major professional milestone. Recognizing the importance of connection and collaboration among family child care educators, I co-founded H.A.P.P.Y. Homes of Ohio, a local nonprofit family child care network. Through this work, my involvement expanded to include leadership and participation in local and state chapters of NAEYC.

I earned National Accreditation through NAFCC in 2012 and achieved a Star 5 rating in Ohio’s Quality Rating and Improvement System in 2015. These accomplishments inspired me to further my education, culminating in a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education in 2018. Following graduation, I was recruited by my local Resource and Referral agency as an Early Childhood Specialist, where I supported family child care educators across three Ohio counties. This role has allowed me to collaborate and volunteer with numerous local, state, and national organizations. In 2022–2023, I was honored to be selected as a Leader Shaping Leaders Fellow, strengthening my commitment to leadership within NAFCC. If elected to the Board of Directors, I will bring decades of experience, dedication, and a lifelong commitment to supporting early childhood educators and their professional growth.

My journey in family child care is deeply personal, rooted in a passion for supporting children, families, and the providers who care for them every day. That passion is what led me to serve as Arizona State Representative for the National Association for Family Child Care, and it is the same passion that inspires me to seek this role once again.

As a family child care provider and CEO of my own program, I understand firsthand the dedication, resilience, and heart this work requires. Earning a Quality First star rating was not just an achievement, but a reflection of my commitment to providing high-quality care and continuously growing as an educator and leader.

Along the way, I saw the need for stronger connection and support among home-based providers, which led me to found the Arizona Network for Home-Based Childcare. What started as a vision to bring providers together has grown into a supportive network where we share resources, uplift one another, and build collective strength.

My advocacy extends beyond my program. Through my work with the Child Care Advocacy Group of Casa Grande and partnerships with organizations like Southwest Human Development, Candelen, and First Things First, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with others who are equally committed to improving outcomes for children and families. These experiences have shaped my understanding of the challenges we face and the possibilities ahead when we work together.

I am seeking to serve again because I believe in the power of our community. I believe every provider deserves to be heard, supported, and valued. I am committed to continuing to advocate, connect, and lead with purpose—ensuring that family child care providers across Arizona have the voice and resources they need to thrive.

It would be an honor to continue this work and to serve our community once again.

I have also attached my current photograph. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Fresh out of high school, I knew the calling and purpose over my life was to impact the leaders of tomorrow. As a proud Latina educator, my cultural background has shaped my passion for service, leadership, and advocacy within the educational community. In the pursuit of fulfilling my calling, I realized that to truly influence young learners, I also needed to transition from the role of an educator to that of a mentor. Becoming a mentor allowed me to guide and inspire fellow teachers to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality education and meaningful service to their students. Through professional development opportunities, including earning the Train the Trainer credential through the NAFCC, I gained the tools to support and coach other providers as classroom observers. This experience also gave me the privilege of learning from a variety of educational programs and discovering the diverse philosophies that shape each classroom environment.

It has also been an honor to serve as a State Representative for the National Association for Family Child Care and as Chair of the Nomination Committee within our state association. These leadership opportunities have strengthened my commitment to empowering educators, advocating for quality early childhood education, and building strong professional communities.

Driven by a passion for education, leadership, and community impact, I remain committed to nurturing environments where children, families, and educators can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. My mission is to continue inspiring growth in both teachers and students while helping shape confident learners and future leaders.

She has made it her mission to help bring balance to their lives by directing them to programs and resources that allow them to achieve goals they once thought were unattainable.

Erma guides them toward services that support their children’s physical and mental development, providing early interventions that are crucial to their success. She also helps connect families to housing programs, assisting them in finding safe, affordable homes that bring stability into their lives. Beyond that, she offers respite for parents who are overwhelmed and in need of a space where they can breathe and regroup. For those in need of necessities, she has created a revolving closet filled with clothes for both adults and children. Her aim is to empower these families holistically—not just by focusing on their immediate needs but by encouraging them to further their education. Erma assists with filling out FAFSA forms, online applications, and writing resumes.

Whatever is needed, she strives to provide support, encouragement, and empowerment to help them move forward. But her work doesn’t stop with families. She has also devoted herself to supporting other early childhood educators because she knows how isolating the field can be. Erma says that “although we work during the most formative years of children’s lives—raising the future doctors, lawyers, scientists, educators, and leaders of the world—our contributions often go unrecognized and undervalued. It’s essential that we, as early childhood educators, are seen for the vital work we do”. That’s why she works tirelessly, both independently and with her association, ACPN, to empower, encourage, and educate other educators. It is important to her that she leaves a legacy of purpose and impact. Her focus is on guiding the next dynamic group of early childhood educators so that they can continue providing excellent care for families in the years to come. Erma is deeply passionate about this work, with over 45 years of experience in educating and empowering others. Whether it is through her ministry in Christian Education or her leadership in Early Childhood Education, she is committed to helping others realize their full potential.

From the U.S. and British Virgin Islands to Kenya, Africa, she has had the privilege of teaching adults, youth, ministry leaders, and laypeople, helping them grow in their spiritual journeys and leadership roles. In her home church, where she has served in the area Christian Education for over 40 years, and through her roles as Dean of Christian Education for the Illinois National BaptistState Convention and her district association. Erma has developed programs that help others deepen their faith and strengthen their leadership. In the same way, she has helped countless educators open and operate their own childcare facilities, mentoring them through every step of the process. It has been a rewarding journey, watching these educators succeed and create environments where young children can thrive. Whether through Christian education or early childhood education, her purpose has always been to equip others with the tools, knowledge, and encouragement needed to flourish. And as Erma looks to the future, she is committed to ensuring that
