Provider Appreciation Day

Provider Appreciation Day is an annual celebration on the Friday before Mother’s Day that recognizes the work of child care providers, teachers and other educators of young children. Established by NAFCC in 1995 as a way to thank family child care and center-based providers, Provider Appreciation Day is now celebrated throughout the United States and around the world as a “thank you” to the people who educate, support and spend a tireless amount of time with our children.

At NAFCC, we take the lead in celebrating family child care providers and the more than 123,000 regulated family child care programs that serve children and families. It’s important to acknowledge the essential workforce family child care providers represent and honor the work of their hands. Join us in celebrating the educators who provide care, learning and lifelong success for young children in their home.

History of Provider
Appreciation Day

Provider Appreciation Day was established by NAFCC past president Sue Williamson, Sue Schmidt, Ginny Rutkowski and Monday Morning Inc. staff on 1995. Founded as a day honoring and recognizing Family Child Care Providers, in addition to center based providers and advocates.

What started as a small grass-roots effort grew into a national day that is now celebrated throughout the United States, and with military child care, around the world under the trailblazing leadership of Sue Williamson. She passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 after an illness. NAFCC will always remember her contribution to the field of family child care and early education. Her passion for honoring Family Child Care Providers through Provider Appreciation Day remains with us.

How participating in both the LSL Program and EmpowerHer has had an impact
While I am currently a candidate in the Leaders Shaping Leaders (LSL) Program, I have had the opportunity to participate in the EmpowerHer Child Care Business Accelerator, which has been instrumental in strengthening my business operations, financial management, and long-term growth strategy. These experiences have enhanced my ability to lead with intention, build sustainable systems, and position my program for future expansion.

One or two words of advice you would offer to new family child care providers?
Stay consistent and intentional.

Any advice you would share about caring for yourself and prioritizing wellness as a provider?
As providers, we often prioritize the needs of others before our own. It is important to establish boundaries, schedule time for rest, and create systems that support both your business and personal well-being. Prioritizing your wellness allows you to show up fully for the children and families you serve.

How you and your team plan to celebrate Provider Appreciation Day?
Provider Appreciation Day is a meaningful opportunity to recognize the dedication and impact of those who serve young children and families. At Carmen’s Pride & Joy Inc, we plan to celebrate and honor two fellow family child care business owners who have supported our program over the past year by sending flowers and a handwritten thank you note as a gesture of appreciation. In addition, we will recognize our team by providing a special lunch to thank them for their continued commitment, hard work, and the care they provide each day.

Ivonne Béjar

Family child care educator in Sacramento, California

My name is Ivonne Béjar, a family child care educator in Sacramento, California, with over 23 years running my own program and more than 35 years in the field of early childhood education. My educational mission led me to start my family child care program with the belief that together we are stronger. For this reason, I am an active member and leader in UDW Local 3930, serving as part of the negotiation team with the state and being reelected for a second year to represent the voice of my educator community across California. I was elected Area Representative for District 8 of the UDW Union, representing child care providers in Northern California. I am also, for the fourth year, a member of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Educator-Led Care Communities (ELCC). I am part of the CCPU Training Fund as a cohort leader and currently serve as an AOK facilitator for educators. I am a graduate of the PITC training institute and a member of NAFCC. I deeply enjoy mentoring future child care providers and being an activist in my community. During the pandemic, I created the “Childcare Provider Empowerment Group” to inform and support child care educators. My mission is to promote equity and equality for my colleagues and to elevate the quality of child care, inspiring and empowering my community to never stop pursuing their dreams and to always strive for excellence as individuals and as educators.

How participating in both the LSL Program and EmpowerHer has had an impact
Participating in the Leaders Shaping Leaders (LSL) Program and the EmpowerHer Business Accelerator has been a transformative experience. Both programs have provided me with valuable tools to strengthen my leadership, my business vision, and my confidence as an educator. They have also allowed me to connect with a powerful community of women who share the same commitment to elevating the quality of child care.

One or two words of advice you would offer to new family child care providers?
To new family child care providers, I would say: believe in your value and in the profound impact you have on the lives of children and families. Do not be afraid to keep learning, to seek support, and to build community. You are not alone.

Any advice you would share about caring for yourself and prioritizing wellness as a provider?
When it comes to self-care, it is essential to remember that in order to care for others well, we must first care for ourselves. Prioritizing our physical and emotional well-being is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Taking small moments throughout the day, setting healthy boundaries, and surrounding ourselves with a support network makes a big difference.
To celebrate Provider Appreciation Day, in my program we will create a special moment with the children and families. I also want to take this opportunity to express deep gratitude to all educators across the country who, with love, passion, and a true calling to serve, make our work such a noble and valuable profession. In addition, we will be participating in in-person gatherings and union meetings where we will honor and recognize the important work of our field, celebrating together the strength and impact of our community.
