My name is Ivonne Béjar, a family child care educator in Sacramento, California, with over 23 years running my own program and more than 35 years in the field of early childhood education. My educational mission led me to start my family child care program with the belief that together we are stronger. For this reason, I am an active member and leader in UDW Local 3930, serving as part of the negotiation team with the state and being reelected for a second year to represent the voice of my educator community across California. I was elected Area Representative for District 8 of the UDW Union, representing child care providers in Northern California. I am also, for the fourth year, a member of the National Advisory Committee (NAC) on Educator-Led Care Communities (ELCC). I am part of the CCPU Training Fund as a cohort leader and currently serve as an AOK facilitator for educators. I am a graduate of the PITC training institute and a member of NAFCC. I deeply enjoy mentoring future child care providers and being an activist in my community. During the pandemic, I created the “Childcare Provider Empowerment Group” to inform and support child care educators. My mission is to promote equity and equality for my colleagues and to elevate the quality of child care, inspiring and empowering my community to never stop pursuing their dreams and to always strive for excellence as individuals and as educators.

How participating in both the LSL Program and EmpowerHer has had an impact
Participating in the Leaders Shaping Leaders (LSL) Program and the EmpowerHer Business Accelerator has been a transformative experience. Both programs have provided me with valuable tools to strengthen my leadership, my business vision, and my confidence as an educator. They have also allowed me to connect with a powerful community of women who share the same commitment to elevating the quality of child care.
One or two words of advice you would offer to new family child care providers?
To new family child care providers, I would say: believe in your value and in the profound impact you have on the lives of children and families. Do not be afraid to keep learning, to seek support, and to build community. You are not alone.
Any advice you would share about caring for yourself and prioritizing wellness as a provider?
When it comes to self-care, it is essential to remember that in order to care for others well, we must first care for ourselves. Prioritizing our physical and emotional well-being is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Taking small moments throughout the day, setting healthy boundaries, and surrounding ourselves with a support network makes a big difference.
To celebrate Provider Appreciation Day, in my program we will create a special moment with the children and families. I also want to take this opportunity to express deep gratitude to all educators across the country who, with love, passion, and a true calling to serve, make our work such a noble and valuable profession. In addition, we will be participating in in-person gatherings and union meetings where we will honor and recognize the important work of our field, celebrating together the strength and impact of our community.
