NAFCC Accreditation Disclaimer:

This one-year extension (January 31, 2023) is provided in order to grant additional time to applicants to accumulate required training hours for accreditation and gather documents required to move forward in the Accreditation Observation process. Please note that this extension is not being granted for purposes of extending accreditation status to any provider who at the time of this issuance is not in compliance with all local/ state/federal mandated requirements related to the operation of a family child care program. NAFCC assumes no responsibility for any individual or program who knowingly is not in such compliance during the period of the extension.

All providers receiving a one-year extension, must adhere to the following terms:

  • Accreditation extensions apply only to reaccrediting providers.

  • All reaccrediting programs must maintain full compliance in completing required accreditation documentation during the granted extension period.

  • Reaccreditation and 18-month Update documents must be submitted to the Accreditation department by August 31, 2022.

  • All reaccreditation and Update fees must be paid by November 30, 2022.

  • Programs must have at least two enrolled children on-site during the observation visit.

  • Programs should continue to accumulate training hours during the accreditation extension period. The reaccrediting training hours will be required when renewing accreditation.

Accreditation 18-month Update Information

I. How can I apply for my Update?
There are 3 ways to pay and submit your application.

II. How much does the Update application cost?
The application fee is $160.00 plus the annual membership of $45.00 for NAFCC members and $240 for non-members.

III. What documents do I need to submit for my Update?
You can refer to your 18month Update checklist for a list or documents. But generally, you will need to submit the following:

  • Completed Application
  • CPR & First Aid Certificate
  • Current License
  • Federal/State Mandated Background Clearance
  • Current Health Form
  • Current TB Screening Form</li

IV. What are the training hours & requirements for an Update?
Training certificates are not required but is recommended that you submit additional training hours.

V. Will I be observed to complete the Update?
No, observations are not performed for application updates.

IV. What are the training hours & requirements for Re-Accreditation?
For Re-Accreditation, you must complete & submit 90 hours of training in the childcare field within the last 3 years.

Reaccrediting Providers waiting for Observation

All providers who are currently awarded an extension valid through July 31, 2022 will automatically receive an additional extension through January 31, 2023.

If providers are in queue to receive an observation, they must participate in the observation process when called for scheduling.

NAFCC Training Hours
Breakdown for re-accrediting providers

Re-accrediting providers must complete at least 90 clock hours of documented family care related education/training through any combination of the following 4 options:

At least 45 hours of training for re-accrediting providers must be comprised of some combination of degrees, college courses, and/or CEU’s.

Option 1:

  • A Masters in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related filed from an accredited college or university may be submitted for up to 45% of required training hours.
  • A Baccalaureate in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field from an accredited college or university may be submitted for up to 35% of required training hours.
  • An Associate (2 year) degree in Early Childhood Education, Child development or related field from an accredited college may be submitted for up to 25% of required training hours.
  • Note: A Baccalaureate or higher degree in an unrelated field from an accredited college or university may be submitted for up to 15% of required training hours.

Option 2

  • A minimum of one college course (3 credit hour/45 clock hours) from an accredited college or university dated within the current accreditation period covering family child care topics.

Option 3

  • A minimum of 4.5 CEU’s (45 clock hours) dated within the current accreditation period covering family child care related topics.

Option 4

  • A maximum of 45 clock hours of training dated within the current accreditation period covering family child care related topics. This training must be unduplicated and may not be reflected in any other option of training used for accreditation. This training may be met through the following areas:
    1. Workshops of two hours or less (up to 28 hours)
    2. Classes or workshops taught by the candidate (up to 18 contact hours, limited to one time per training topic
    3. Training from a recognized agency or organization proficient in child care provider education. Recognized training sources include but are not limited to child care resource and referral agencies and family child care associations, early childhood programs such as Head Start, school districts. U.S. Military services, state government child care agencies, colleges, universities, vocational and technical schools.

The determination that training meets accreditation criteria is made by NAFCC. Questions regarding the distribution of training hours can be emailed to accreditation@ nafcc.org.

  • Trainings must be recorded on the official NAFCC Training record form
  • All certificates and verification must be attached to the form
  • Verification of the training must include the name of the provider, the topic of the training, the number of hours attended, and if possible, the signature or stamp by the instructor or institution. A course description or syllabus may be requested.
